Seven Disadvantages of Outsourcing, Part 2

by Linda P. Morton

If you’re considering using outsourcing for some of your business tasks, you need to know the seven disadvantages of outsourcing. This article covers four of those disadvantages. The first three were covered in Part 1.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 4: Outsourcing Often Leaves You Without Follow-up Support

You will usually have difficulty getting follow-up support after a job has been completed and you’ve paid for it. Vendors don’t usually check their messages for completed jobs, and most outsource service sites require that you communicate with vendors directly through the site.

Either way, it’s difficult to get prompt follow-up service if you can get it at all.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 5: Proprietary Information And Site Security May Be Abused

When you select an outsource vendor, you are trusting a stranger to do your job. If that job is proprietary, you have no way of assuring that the vendor will honor your rights. Some have even sold jobs that they did for a client and became their client’s competitor.

You also need to be aware that allowing a vendor into the code for your site can destroy it. Sometimes the vendor legitimately needs the code in order to complete your job, but you have no guarantee that the vendor will respect your property.

This is a greater risk if the vendor gets angry with you because you had to cancel the contract. Once a vendor has your code, you don’t know what destruction will result from that anger.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 6: You May Become Overdependent On Outsourcing

When you depend on outsource vendors to perform tasks that are vital to your business success, you run the risk of becoming dependent on external people. They may not necessarily have the best interest of your business as a priority.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 7: Outsource Relationships Are Short-Term

When you do find a good vendor that you want to use again, it’s difficult to develop a long-term relationship because outsource vendors move from job to job.

A good outsource vendor collects good reviews. As a result, good vendors win more jobs and stay busy. Just requesting one for a job doesn’t mean that the vendor will have time to do your job when you need it done.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing: Conclusion

You must know the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing in order to make informed decisions about when and if you want to use outsource vendors.

You should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing carefully.
