Watch Your Google PageRank Drop Like a Brick

by Tom Sommers

So you have your site set up, and you are working on getting traffic to it. You know that for free search engine traffic, you should work to get a higher pagerank (PR). The problem is that there are certain practices that you will see which could ruin your pagerank and keep you off the top search engine results. Here are some tips on what to avoid in getting your pagerank higher.

Have you ever been to a site that is just loaded with flashing banners and other ads? The website owner just hopes you click on something. Well, if you have NOT seen this sort of site, that is because they do not appear on the search engine results. That should tell you something! With too many outgoing links, your site will be seen as just a link farm and you will get penalized for it.

Adding new pages to your site won’t increase your PR unless you understand how to link them properly. Each new page you add needs to be linked to an important page in your site. This is because Google won’t index pages that have not been linked to other pages.

There are certain types of pages that you should not add to your site. Google will penalize you if you have a lot of identical or very similar pages on your site. A rule to keep in mind is to ask yourself whether your page adds any useful information to your website visitor.

As you work on getting backlinks to your site, don’t worry too much about getting that link from that huge popular site. You can often benefit more by getting lots of links from smaller sites that have lower pagerank. And these links are easier to get, so you can get more links to your site, which can help you more than that one link from that one popular monster site.

As you continue on your pagerank building tasks, one thing to consider is to just quit thinking about your pagerank. Huh? That’s right. Forget about it. Concentrate instead on providing high quality content on your site. Remember, people use the search engines because they want good information. And like any business, your goal is to provide your customers what they want. By doing this, others will want to link to your site, and you will naturally grow your pagerank and your position in search engine results.
